Snowden May Testify in German Parliamentary Board of Inquiry

Member of German Parliament (Bundestag) Hans-Christian Ströbele of the Green Party has met with Edward Snowden in Moskow and discussed whether there is a possibility to testify in the Merkel NSA tapping case which has been a wake up call for Germany’s lawmakers. The ever increasing NSA total surveillance scandal had been largely downplayed, even declared finished, by campaigning leading members of bigger parties CDU/CSU and SPD during the summer. That Merkel responds now when her not encrypted mobile phone had been intercepted by the American spy organization for more than ten years (German-American friendship is at its low currently) is a welcome turn but misleading. She certainly knows that the American interest in what our leaders plan or do (concealing from the public) may be at the same level as in what terrorists hatch.

The real scandal is that NSA and its British counterpart GCHQ seem to monitor communications of 99.9999% or more of the innocent (neither nation leader nor terrorist) world population. So why should serious whistle-blower Edward Snowden engage in what has to be considered a blunt distraction, risking his limited freedom and maybe even his life when traveling to Germany? Who actually cares about Merkel who had irresponsibly used technically inferior mobile phones for years?

Whether the German Parliament is willing to set up an inquiry board is not even certain. Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft might have been an illusion in post-WWII Germany. The U.S. administration may have means to bring it under the heel.

Trouble All Over the World

Presently, Barack Obama faces trouble everywhere. Having denied (one of these “plausible denials”) having had known that German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s mobile phone (and that of other European leaders) had been tapped (actually for more than ten years) by NSA has only deepened the crisis with America’s European allies. His unclear policy in the Middle East as regards the Israel/Palestinian conflict, Syria, and Iran has angered the Saudi Arabian Kingdom which has recently rejected an offered non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council.

The editor-in-chief of the Kuwaiti tabloid Arab Times, Ahmed Al-Jarallah, has written today a vitriolic revile on recent U.S. American foreign politics. Although correctly pointing to confusing U.S. American Middle Eastern politics, the piece is full of dire misconceptions and even expressing threats.

“[T]he Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is not a banana republic or America’s backyard [sic!]. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a distinguished position in world politics and plays an equally important role in world affairs. It is unwise to play lighthearted politics with Riyadh. The Saudi leadership is aware of the size of the role it plays and toes the path accordingly. This is what your administration has failed to realize during your recent opportunistic policy in the region. Nonetheless, your country alone will be the loser when the US public debt has reached unprecedented levels.

[…] Riyadh has never succumbed to instructions and has never adopted the ‘every action has a reaction’ policy. This is the Gulf, the Arab and the Islamic reference. Don’t play ‘bargain’ politics at the expense of this policy and then give instructions to move forward. However, the one who looks at the situation from this angle is a shortsighted person and does not know the size of the Kingdom. The White House has to look back at the crystal clear stances and independent decisions adopted by the Kingdom throughout the past seven decades of the Saudi-American alliance.”

Well, no doubt, Saudi Arabia is the cradle of the late 20th and 21st century terrorism. It has one of the worst records of human rights. That realpolitik had made it a strong ally of the West doesn’t make it better. It is furthermore deeply hypocritical when Al-Jarallah correctly states,

“The policy […] which Washington practices with several Arab countries is the reason for bloodshed in Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq. America has offered these countries to Iran on a silver platter and turned a blind eye to sectarian massacres. America’s behavior in Egypt has removed the mask of democracy and human rights which the US so proudly boasts about. Its ambassador in Cairo played the role of musician in the orchestra of Brotherhood. It stood against the will of over 40 million Egyptians who poured onto the streets to topple Mors[i] — the supreme leader of Brotherhood — who gets guidance from Washington.

“Speaking of Bahrain, we need not remind the readers of the role played by the US Ambassador to Manama — drummer in the band of the so-called opposition — originally the fifth line used by Iran to enter Bahrain just like the other GCC states to realize the Persian expansionist dream which has not changed with the demise of the Shah.”

After all, Kuwait had been freed from Saddam’s troops in 1991 by the Americans. It is said, the common Kuwaiti will never forget that. After more than 20 years this war is not over, though. Then, Bahrain’s Shi’ite majority is ruled, or rather suppressed, by a Sunni ruler. Their democratic uprising in 2011, a spin-off of the Arab Spring, has been brutally cracked down by invading tanks from Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries. What “role” has been played by the US Ambassador to Manama then? Does anybody believe that the Americans were planning a coup in Bahrain?

It is a blessing that Saudi Arabia has rejected the non-permanent seat in the Security Council. Its human rights records and sponsorship of terrorism indicate that is a rogue state. It is another misconception by Al-Jarallah when he concludes,

“The Kingdom and the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz by taking this historical decision [sic!] has sounded warning bells that the world is ready to confront the double-standard policies. It is a strong warning to the United States of America which wrongfully believes that it can lead the world with its cowboy policy.”

We all should be relieved upon Abdullah’s decision.

No Woman, No Drive

We do not know who actually is Hisham Fageeh. According to his own account he is an artist and social activist, but I doubt whether he is from Saudi Arabia. His cute satirical video would have earned him a dire fatwa by religious authorities. The video had been clicked five million times in just two days. It is Fageeh’s “own rendition” to Bob Marley’s No Woman No Cry on the absurd situation of women banned from driving in the terrible Kingdom.

Fair Game

When women in Saudia Arabia today want to participate in another mass driving protest and the autocratic government warns them to do so there might be a grave misconception about the background. This is not a laughable matter. Twenty-first century medieval society in Saudi Arabia pretends cultural consensus about females who are second class citizens, incapable of self-determination, and in need for protection of father, husband or brother. Protection from what? Well, that society (in accord with many Muslim and other societies) gives men the right to rape molest self-determined “unprotected” women. The problem is not only that of a basically male (or boys’) society. Boys and girls are both nurtured by mothers and grandmothers who seem to agree with the respective gender-specific demeanor.

Saudi Arabia, still the strongest ally of the West in the Middle East, has recently rejected a non-permanent seat in the United Nations’ Security Council. With its disastrous human right record, Saudi Arabia should never had been offered the seat. After having spend a lot of money and time to finally join the UNSC it is said that the Saudi princes were angered over Barack Obama’s shying away from bombing Damascus and his overture toward Iran. Saudi Arabia is sponsoring terrorist Islamist opposition groups in Syria and would likely align itself with Israel to rather bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Iran’s presstv channel, which is not really a trustworthy news agency, derisively reports on “law” enforcement in Saudi Arabia (which does not even exist in the kingdom).

Several women said they had received threatening telephone calls from the Interior Ministry asking them not to drive on Saturday.

Ministry spokesman General Mansur al-Turki also said that ‘it is known that women in Saudi are banned from driving and laws will be applied against violators and those who demonstrate in support’ of this cause.

Saudi officials also warned online activists against supporting the planned protest challenging the kingdom’s male-only driving rules.

The cyber-dissident law ‘will be applied against violators’ while other measures will be taken against ‘those who gather to support’ the planned protest, the ministry said on Friday.”

A pariah state hopeful of being welcomed back in the league of nations soon makes fun of another rogue state.

Keith Will Fix It

What is the background and, well Science, of NSA activities is shown in this video in which Gen. Keith Alexander, Commander of the U.S. Cyber Command and Head of the NSA has been interviewed by Jessica L. Tozer for the U.S. DoD propaganda website Armed with Science. Its targeted audience is the American populace, in particular its common  military staff. He spies not lies is the message.

Pretty naive questions by Tozer (“What is it about these missions and these programs that makes them so significant? It is the protection of the people, right?”) are faded-in and there is very limited interaction in the interview (“Do you have an iPhone?” “I do indeed have an iPhone”) where Alexander lectures on the tremendous benefits of spying on all and everything. Tozer is a blogger for DoDLive (Armed with Science) and “an Army veteran, an avid science fiction fan, both of which contribute to her enthusiasm for technology in the military.”

Again we hear that myth so far that people might die upon the NSA leaks and those who are responsible for that have to be held accountable. “My [Alexander’s] concern is the revealing of these programs allows terrorists to know the best weapons that we have against them.” “It will cause irreversible and significant damage.”

Alexander concludes that “great people [at NSA are] doing a great job. They are the heroes.”

“This leaker [Snowden] is not a hero, he will cause lives, I think that’s irresponsible and significant damage to this nation, irreversible and significant damage, and that will come out eventually.”
